Towards a Non-perturbative Formulation of IIB Superstrings by Matrix Models

چکیده

We address the problem of a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory by means of the recently proposed matrix models. For the model by Ishibashi, Kawai, Kitazawa and Tsuchiya (IKKT), we perform one-loop calculation of the interaction between operator-like solutions identified with D-brane configurations of the type IIB superstring (in particular, for parallel moving and rotated static p-branes). Comparing to the superstring calculations, we show that the matrix model reproduces the superstring results only at large distances or small velocities, corresponding to keeping only the lowest mass closed string modes. We propose a modification of the IKKT matrix model introducing an integration over an additional Hermitian matrix required to have positive definite eigenvalues, which is similar to the square root of the metric in the continuum Schild formulation of IIB superstrings. We show that for this new matrix action the Nambu–Goto version of the Green–Schwarz action is reproduced even at quantum level. ∗E-mail: [email protected] †E-mail: [email protected] [email protected] ‡E-mail: [email protected] §E-mail: [email protected] ¶E-mail: [email protected]

A Possible IIB Superstring Matrix Model with Euler Characteristic and a Double Scaling Limit

We show that a recently proposed Yang-Mills matrix model with an auxiliary field, which is a candidate for a non-perturbative description of type IIB superstrings, captures the Euler characteristic of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. This happens at the saddle point for the Yang-Mills field. It turns out that the large-n limit in this matrix model corresponds to a double scaling limit in the P...

Towards Matrix Models of Iib Superstrings

Recently there has been a lot of papers on matrix models and superstrings, induced by the work of Banks, Fischler, Shenker, and Susskind (hep-th/ 9706168). I refer to Makeenko’s talk at this meeting for a general review of this subject. Most of the work∗ reported in this talk has been done together with Fayyazuddin, Makeenko, Smith, and Zarembo. As explained in Makeenko’s (virtual) talk at this...

In order to consider non-perturbative effects of superstrings, we try to apply dynamical triangulations to the type IIB superstrings. The discretized action is constructed from the type IIB matrix model proposed as a constructive definition of superstring theory. The action has the local N=2 supersymmetry explicitly, and has no extra fermionic degrees of freedom. We evaluate the partition funct...

Type IIB Random Superstrings

We consider random superstrings of type IIB in d-dimensional space. The discretized action is constructed from the supersymetric matrix model, which has been proposed as a constructive definition of superstring theory. Our action is invariant under the local N = 2 super transformations, and doesn’t have any redundant fermionic degrees of freedom. Institution from April 1999 is KEK. E-mail addre...

Supergravity, Ads/cft Correspondence, and Matrix Models

The recent developments towards the possible non-perturbative formulation of string/M theory using supersymmetric Yang-Mills matrix models (SYMs) are discussed. In the first part, we give a critical review on the status of our present understanding, focusing on the connection of the D0-brane matrix models to supergravity and its relevance to the so-called Matrix-theory conjecture. We also discu...
